The Launch (Wednesdays at 9 p.m. on CTV) premiered last week (watch it again here) and gave us our favourite new nail-biter series. After launching last week’s artist Logan Staats and his take on the original song “The Lucky Ones,” the busbee-produced single went to number one in Canada, beating out heavyweights like Ed Sheeran and Justin Timberlake. So yeah, we’re officially hooked on The Launch.
This week we watched as mentors Ryan Tedder from OneRepublic and Jennifer Nettles from Sugarland joined executive producer Scott Borchetta to share their years of experience with a group of talented artists from across Canada. In Week 2 we met Ottawa’s Elijah Woods x Jamie Fine, 18-year-old Basil Phoenix from The Pas, MB, JP Maurice from Vancouver, Divine Lightbody from Brampton, ON, and indie band LITEYEARS from Toronto.
While JP could be the next big songwriter coming out of Canada and Basil had a voice and a natural performance ability that makes us think we’ll be hearing her on the radio soon, it was duo Elijah Woods x Jamie Fine that stole the judges (and our) hearts.
The duo brought their unique blend of writing, producing, and THAT voice to The Launch to earn the title of this week’s launched artist. And earn it they did. Here are 7 times we knew that Elijah Woods x Jamie Fine were the real deal.
WHEN WE SAW THEIR NATURAL CHEMISTRY
Elijah said that after hearing Jamie singing on a friend’s iPhone, sparks flew. The two have been inseparable ever since, spending the past three years crafting a sound that is uniquely their own and missing from Top 40 radio. Plus, we gushed every time they smiled at one another while performing. As Scott said, “I love how much you two love making music together.”
WHEN WE WITNESSED THE MENTORS' REACTIONS
Almost as exciting as watching the pair perform was watching the mentors react to the magic happening in front of them. Scott looked too stunned to speak, Jennifer was so excited she laughed out loud, and Ryan couldn’t keep his straight-faced demeanor after a few bars. You know you’ve got something special when the guy who works with Adele is excited.
WHEN THEY PLAYED THEIR ORIGINAL SONG
Not only did the pair totally re-imagine Major Lazer’s “Lean On” as a stunning ballad, they also performed a verse and chorus from their beautiful original track “8:48.” More please!
WHEN THEY SHOWED THEIR CONFIDENCE IN THE STUDIO
While most of us would be intimidated to walk into the studio with producer god extraordinaire Ryan Tedder and inform him of how we want to change his song, Elijah and Jamie brought their own ideas to the table. Even better, they knew when to listen to Ryan’s suggestions and when to fight for their changes. To be that confident in each other’s talent makes for an unstoppable duo.
WHEN THEY PERFORMED IN FRONT OF AN AUDIENCE
It’s a lot to expect to have a musical group that not only makes exciting and beautiful songs, but can also perform in a way that captivates the audience. Well, expect a lot from Elijah Woods x Jamie Fine. The singer used the stage like she was born on it, performing for the crowd and grooving with Elijah. Nerves? What nerves! The pair had the time of their lives on stage, and in turn made it even more enjoyable for the audience.
WHEN RYAN SAID 'SLAY,' NOT ONCE, BUT TWICE
The guy who works with Beyoncé yelled the word ‘slay’ following the pair’s performance. Again, the guy who WORKS WITH QUEEN BEY YELLED SLAY. Only he and about four other people in the world are legally allowed to use the term and make it binding.
WHEN THEY HUGGED
After finding out they were being launched, we loved Jamie’s reaction. “I’m gonna hug him first,” said Jamie, turning to Elijah. Hello new best friend goals, meet Jamie and Elijah.
Missed the show? You can watch the entire episode right here, or see an extended director’s cut on CraveTV. The Launch is back next Wednesday on CTV at 9 p.m. ET with rocker Nikki Sixx and producer Dann Huff, who will mentor a whole new crop of Canadian singers.
